Phone Unlocking Guide for eSIM

Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM. This guide covers how to check your lock status and unlock through every major carrier. Most unlocks are free.

Step 1

Check if your phone is locked

iPhone

Settings > General > About. Scroll to 'Carrier Lock'. If it says 'No SIM restrictions', your phone is unlocked.

Samsung / Android

Insert a SIM from a different carrier. If you can make a call, the phone is unlocked. Or check Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.

IMEI check

Dial *#06# to find your IMEI. Enter it at your carrier's website or imei.info to check lock status.

Third-party unlocking services

If your carrier won't unlock your phone (financing not complete, past-due balance, or carrier policy), third-party services can help. These services use carrier databases to process unlock requests.

Costs range from $15-$80 depending on the carrier and phone model. Turnaround is typically 1-7 business days. Use reputable services with money-back guarantees. Be cautious of scam services that charge upfront and don't deliver.

Important: Third-party unlocking is legal in most countries but may violate your carrier agreement if your device is still under contract.

Most carrier unlocks take 1-3 business days. Verizon phones auto-unlock after 60 days. Some carriers process unlock requests within hours. Third-party unlocking services typically take 1-7 days.
