eSIM Types Explained
There are three types of eSIM technology: consumer eSIM, M2M eSIM, and iSIM. Travelers only need to know about the first one, but understanding all three helps you make sense of the eSIM market.
The three types
Consumer, M2M, and iSIM
Consumer eSIM
The standard eSIM used in smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Downloads carrier profiles via QR code or app. This is what travel eSIM providers sell.
M2M eSIM
Machine-to-Machine eSIM for IoT and industrial devices. Remote provisioning managed by enterprise platforms. Not user-facing.
iSIM (Integrated SIM)
Next-generation SIM integrated directly into the device's system-on-chip (SoC). Smaller, cheaper, and more power-efficient than discrete eSIM chips.

FAQ
eSIM types FAQ
What type of eSIM do travelers need?
What type of eSIM do travelers need?
Travelers use consumer eSIM profiles. These are data-only or data+voice plans downloaded to your phone via a QR code. All four providers we compare (Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad) provide consumer eSIM profiles.
What is the difference between eSIM and iSIM?
What is the difference between eSIM and iSIM?
An eSIM is a dedicated chip soldered to the motherboard. An iSIM (integrated SIM) is built directly into the phone's main processor, saving space and power. iSIM is newer and not yet widely deployed in consumer phones.
Can M2M eSIMs be used for travel?
Can M2M eSIMs be used for travel?
No. M2M eSIMs are designed for IoT devices like smart meters, fleet trackers, and industrial sensors. They use different provisioning protocols and are not compatible with consumer travel eSIM plans.
What is an eSIM profile?
What is an eSIM profile?
An eSIM profile is a digital carrier configuration downloaded to your eSIM chip. It contains the network credentials, data plan details, and carrier settings. You can store multiple profiles but typically only activate 1-2 at a time.
